This Day in Disney history- February 9
Welcome back to our continuing trip through the history of the Walt Disney Company! Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- February 9.
February 9th was a big day for the Disney Company. It featured the release of three live action films and the return of on original character! Let’s get going!
Cold Storage Released (1951)
On this day in 1951, the Pluto cartoon Cold Storage was released.
Directed by Jack Kinney, the short featured Pluto, who learns that a stork has moved into his doghouse in the winter.
Moon Pilot Premieres (1962)
On this day in 1962, Disney’s Moon Pilot premiered.
The film starred Tom Tryon as astronaut Richmond Talbot, who inadvertently volunteers for the first manned flight around the moon. In addition to Tyron, the film featured Dany Saval, Brian Keith and Tommy Kirk.
The North Avenue Irregulars Released (1979)
On this day in 1979, The North Avenue Irregulars was released.
The film starred Edward Hermann, Barbara Harris, Karen Valentine, and Cloris Leachman. It told the story of a minister and group of church ladies who must drive crooks out of their small town.
Magic Journeys Closes (1986)
On this day in 1986, Magic Journeys closed at EPCOT.
Originally housed in the Journey Into Imagination pavilion‘s Magic Eye Theater. the film would eventually reopen in the Magic Kingdom in December of 1987.
The Disney Institute Opens (1996)
On this day in 1996, The Disney Institute opened in Walt Disney World!
The new institute offered more than 60 programs in eight different “interest areas”. Programs included animation, culinary arts, rock climbing, and wilderness exploration.
Jungle Book Two Premieres (2003)
On this day in 2003, The Jungle Book Two premiered at the El Captain Theatre in Hollywood.
A sequel to the Disney animated classic, the film features Mowgli’s return to the jungle.
Disney Re-Acquires the Oswald (2006)
On this day in 2006, Disney re-acquired the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Disney originally lost the rights to Walt’s creation in 1927. In order to reacquire the character, Disney agreed to trade broadcaster Al Michaels to NBC
Disney Acquires The Disney Fantasy (2012)
On this day in 2012, Disney officially took possession of the Disney Fantasy.
The Fantasy was constructed by German shipbuilder Meyer Werft.
Ron W. Miller Passes Away (2019)
On this day in 2019, Ron W. Miller passed away.
In addition to being Walt Disney’s son in law, Ron Miller served as the CEO of the Walt Disney Company from 1978 to 1984. After leaving the company, he also sat on The Walt Disney Family Museum board of directors.
Blue Sky Studios Closed (2021)
On this day in 2021, Disney announced that it would be closing Blue Sky Studios.
Disney originally acquired the animation company in their purchase of 20th Century Fox. The studio had operated for 34 years.
