This Day in Disney History- May 17
Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- May 17.
May 17th featured the opening of not one, but two Walt Disney World resorts, a new land in Tokyo Disneyland, and the release of a Disney video game. So, let’s get started!
Billposters Released (1940)
On this day in 1940, the Donald Duck cartoon Billposters was released.
In the cartoon, Donald and Goofy attempt to put up advertisements on a farm, to disastrous results.
Bon Voyage Released (1962)
On this day in 1962, Bon Voyage was released.
The film starred Fred MacMurray, Jane Wyman and Tom Kirk. In the film, the Willards from Indiana travel abroad for a once-in-lifetime vacation to France.
American Journeys Opens (1986)
On this day in 1986, the Circle-Vision 360 film “American Journeys” debuted at Tokyo Disneyland.
Another version of the attraction had opened in Walt Disney World in 1984.
Disney’s Port Orleans Resort Opens (1991)
On this day in 1991, Disney’s Port Orleans Resort opened.
Eventually known as Port Orleans French Quarter, the resort took its inspiration from New Orleans.
Saratoga Springs Opens (2004)
On this day in 2004, Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa opened.
The resort, which was inspired by the city of Saratoga Springs, New York, was constructed on the former location of the Disney Institute.
Sam McKim Gets A Main Street Window (2006)
On this day in 2006, Sam McKim was honored with a window on Disneyland’s Main Street USA.
McKim is perhaps best remembered for drawing the first Disneyland Map. During his 32-year career, McKim worked on sever of the studio’s films including Zorro, Johnny Tremain, and The Shaggy Dog. McKim also drew sketches for the 1964-65 New York’s World’s Fair.
Mystic Point Opens (2013)
On this day in 2013, Mystic Point opened at Hong Kong Disneyland.
The new land was set in a dense, uncharted rain forest. Also opening with the land was Mystic Manor, a Haunted Mansion style dark ride.
Disney Princess Majestic Quest Released (2019)
Finally, on this day in 2019, Disney Princess Majestic Quest was released.
The new mobile and computer game was developed by the same company that created Disney Magic Kingdoms.
