The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man Closing Could Have Big Repercussions For Tokyo Disneyland
Universal Studios Japan will lose one of its most popular attractions when The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man ride closes on January 22, 2024, after a 20-year run.
The attraction had been a core part of the Osaka theme park experience since it opened in 2004.
On The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, fans journeyed alongside Peter Parker on a high-speed chase through New York City. When the Sinister Syndicate holds the Statue of Liberty hostage, it is up to the web-slinging hero to save the day.
Why Is Universal Closing The Attraction?
While Universal Studios Japan did not give a reason for the attraction’s closure, widespread rumors have speculated that it is due to the end of the park’s contract with Marvel.
The fact that The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man is closing one day before its 20th anniversary would seem to support that theory.
An Opportunity For Disney
Perhaps the most important outcome of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man closing is what it could mean for Disney.
Without the Marvel-based attraction open at Universal, would Tokyo Disneyland now have the ability to incorporate Marvel properties into their park?
The Oriental Land Company, which owns and operates the Tokyo Disney Resort, has largely ignored Marvel in the past. This may be because MCU is not as widely popular as it is in the United States, or it could theoretically have to do with the theme park rights to Marvel’s characters.
Either way, with the closing of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, it seems as if Tokyo Disneyland now has a big opportunity.
