‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Gets Streaming Release Date
Avatar: The Way of Water made movie history when it debuted last December.
James Cameron’s return to Pandora shattered expectations and box office records on its way to a $2.32 billion return.
Now firmly entrenched as the third-highest-grossing film of all time, The Way of Water will look to conquer new heights when it is finally released on streaming.
An Unusual Streaming Release
Today, 20th Century Studios announced that Avatar: The Way of Water will hit not one, but two streaming services simultaneously.
When the film is released on streaming, it will debut on both Disney+ and Max (formerly known as HBO Max).
The reasons behind this unusual release strategy actually reach back to when 20th Century Fox was still its own studio. At the time, Disney and WarnerMedia agreed to share streaming rights to all movies produced by 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures.
Although Disney has since acquired both studios from Fox, the deal remains in place.
With that being said, the agreement between Disney and WarnerMedia ended in 2022, meaning The Way of Water will likely be the last movie to receive a dual streaming release.
When Will The Way of Water Hit Streaming?
While it took 13 years for Avatar fans to get a sequel to the original film, they won’t have to wait quite that long for The Way of Water to come to streaming.
The movie is set to premiere on both Disney+ and Max on June 7.
