Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- May 14.
Hungry Hoboes Released (1928)
On this day in 1928, the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short Hungry Hoboes was released!
The short featured Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Peg Leg Pete riding the rails. It had been considered lost since before World War II, but was rediscovered in 2011.
George Lucas is Born (1944)
On this day in 1944, George Lucas was born.
One of the most celebrated filmmakers in history, Lucas is best known for his Star Wears and Indiana Jones franchise.
Lucas would collaborate with Disney for the creation of Star Tours, Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye and Captain EO. In 2012, Lucas sold the rights to Star Wars and Indiana Jones to DIsney.
The Mission: SPACE Launch Center Opens (2001)
On this day in 2001, the Mission: SPACE Launch Center opened in Innoventions.
The interactive exhibit served as a preview for the upcoming Mission: Space attraction.
Disney Announces Kingdom Heart (2002)
Also on this day in 2002, DIsney announced their newest role-laying game, Kingdom Hearts.
The game would be released on March 28, 2002 on Playstation 2 .
Slapstick Studios Opens (2008)
On this day in 2008, Slapstick Studios opened in Innoventions West.
Sponsored by Velcro, in the exhibit, guests participated in a game show where they discovered creative ways to solve problems.
UP! Characters Come To Disney’s Hollywood Studios (2009)
On this day in 2009, characters from Disney-Pixar’s UP appeared at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
In celebration of the upcoming film, Russel, Dug, and Carl Fredricksen appeared at the park.
Disney Ceases Disney Dollar Sales (2016)
On this day in 2016, Disney stopped selling Disney Dollars.
The currency was first issued in 1987, with each bill featuring a Disney character. Although no longer available for purchase, Disney Dollars can still be redeemed.
Frozen Ends Broadway Run (2020)
On this day in 2020, Disney announced that Frozen would not be reopening on Broadway.
The show had stopped performances on March 11 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
