Congressional Republicans Look To Strip Disney Of No-Fly Privileges
As Dinsey continues its very public battle with Governor Ron DeSantis in Florida, a group of Republican lawmakers is working to remove the no-fly designations for Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
The group says that no theme parks should receive “special treatment just because they are well-connected.”
The bill, formally known as the Airlines Independent of Restrictions Act, or AIR Act, was reintroduced by Rep. Tony E. Nehls (R-Texas), who first introduced the bill in 2022.
What Would The AIR Act Do?
The AIR Act would direct U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, to rescind the no-fly zone designations over Disney’s domestic theme parks. Those restrictions were put in place following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
“Theme parks like Disney should not receive special treatment just because they are well-connected. Our national security should not be compromised to fit the needs of one corporation,” Nehls said in a statement.
“Blatant Favoritism Towards The Walt Disney Company”
Nelhs has previously accused Buttigieg and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) of “blatant favoritism towards the Walt Disney Company.”
“The FAA has no business granting a no-fly-zone over Disney parks. Universal Studios, Hershey Park, Six Flags, and other theme parks don’t have no-fly-zones over them, and it’s time for Disney to get the same treatment,” said bill co-sponsor Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado).
In the end, the introduction of the AIR Act will be little more than political theater. Having been just introduced, the bill would need to pass the House and Senate before it could be signed into law by President Joe Biden. Something that has little to no chance of occurring.
