Damon Lindelof Says He Was ‘Asked To Leave’ Star Wars
The biggest announcement at this year’s Star Wars Celebration was Kathleen Kennedy’s revelation that Daisy Ridley would be returning to the franchise as Rey Skywalker.
The upcoming film, which will be helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, will feature Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order.
At one time, it appeared as if screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibsen would write the film. However, reports subsequently came out that both screenwriters had left the project, just days after turning in a script for the film.
Lindelof’s Initial Comments
Following his exit from the project, Lindelof took the high road, wishing everybody involved in the film well.
“The movie is still happening, but unfortunately not with me,” Lindelof said. “I wish them all the best of luck. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is an incredible director, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with.”
In a recent interview with Esquire, Lindelof expanded on his Star Wars exit.
“Asked to Leave”
“I was in more than talks to join the Star Wars universe,” Lindelof says. “I joined the Star Wars universe and was asked to leave.”
Despite not being able to see the Star Wars project through, Lindelof says that he would be willing to take a crack at the franchise again.
“Will I get back in line outside the club and try to get back in again?” Lindelof asked. “Absolutely.”
“If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again,” he jokes, “or again again try, as Yoda would say.”
