This Day In Disney History- April 8
Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- April 8.
April 8th featured the debut of a new Disneyland attraction, the opening of a new “park” in Walt Disney World, and the loss of a Disney Legend. So, let’s get started.
Ye Olden Days Released (1933)
On this day in 1933, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Ye Olden Days was released.
In the cartoon, Mickey and friends put on a play in Medieval times. Mickey, who plays a wandering minstrel, must save Princess Minnie from being forced to marry Dippy Dawg.
Sea Salts Released (1949)
On this day in 1949, the Donald Duck short Sea Salts was released.
In this short, Donald and Dootle Beetle reminisce about old times at sea.
The Walt Disney Story Debuts (1973)
On this day in 1973, the Main Street Opera House debuted the Walt Disney Story.
The 23 minute film was celebration of Walt’s life, and narrated by the man himself.
Treasure Island Opens (1974)
On this day in 1974, Treasure Island opened in Walt Disney World.
Located in Bay Lake, the beach featured a beached pirate ship, and tropical wildlife.
Mighty Ducks The Movie: The First Face Off Released (1997)
On this day in 1997, Mickey Ducks the Movie: The First Face Off was released.
The animated film was made up of the first three episodes of Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series.
The Kim Possible Movie: So the Drama Debuts (2005)
On this day in 2005, The Kim Possible Movie: So the Drama debuted.
In the film, Kim needs a date for the junior prom.
Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast Opens (2006)
On this day in 2006, Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast opened at Disneyland Paris.
The attraction was a version of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, which opened in 1998.
Julie Andrews Honored (2008)
On this day in 2008, a special horse on King Arthur’s Carousel was dedicated to Julie Andrews.
The lead horse of the carousel, Jingles, commemorated Andrew’s many years of service to the Walt Disney Company.
Annette Funicello Passes Away (2013)
On this day in 2013, Disney Legend Annette Joanne Funicello passed away at the age of 70.
Funicello rose to fame as a member of The Mickey Mouse Club. Following her time on the show, Funicello starred in a series of Disney live-action movies including Babes in Toyland, The Shaggy Dog and The Misadventures of Merlin Jones.
