Why You Should Be Excited about American Born Chinese
What’s the big deal here? I mean, did you SEE that trailer? If so, you understand the appeal. Let’s go back in time a bit, though. On October 24th, 2021, Disney announced its intention to create a television series from the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel created by Gene Luen Yang.
Disney’s decision came roughly 18 months after filming had occurred for Everything Everywhere All at Once (EEAAO), which sounds like a random fact.
In truth, one project dramatically influenced the other’s production.Word spread in industry circles that the cast on Everything Everywhere All at Once had blown away all reasonable expectations.
Disney’s ardent support of onscreen representation paid dividends here, as it hired several members of that cast.
Yes, all four of the principal leads in Everything Everywhere All at Once appear in American Born Chinese!
Michelle Yeoh will reunite with Ke Huy Quan as two of the co-stars on this project. Meanwhile, Stephanie Hsu guest stars in some episodes as well.
Even screen legend James Hong, who recently turned 94, will show up in some episodes of American Born Chinese.
Disney further stacked the deck with two of Yeoh’s co-stars from her other recent blockbuster, Crazy Rich Asians.
Comedians Ronnie Chieng and Jimmy O. Yang join Hsu as guest stars, making American Born Chinese feel like the spiritual successor to Everything Everywhere All at Once AND Crazy Rich Asians.
