Disney Unveils A “Real” Lightsaber At SXSW

There may not be a more iconic item in all of movie history than a Jedi’s lightsaber.

For generations, Star Wars fans have dreamed of wielding the glowing weapon in battle.

While mass produced attempts at creating a lightsaber have improved in quality over the year, the previous designs have failed to give fans the feeling they dreamed of.

At SXSW this week, Walt Disney Imagineering unveiled an impressive “real” lightsaber at their Creating Happiness: The Art & Science of Disney Parks Storytelling panel.

Josh D’Amaro Wields a Lightsaber

Here is what Disney Parks chairman Josh D’Amaro had to say about Disney’s constant innovation:

Disney has previously patented its lightsaber design, and used the weapon as part of the Galactic Starcruiser hotel experience.

At the conference however, D’Amaro got to showcase the technology to a wowed audience. Here is a video.

Not For Mass Release

While the design of the lightsaber might be a little different than its appearance in media, the technology is certainly impressive.

I for one, would love to get my hands on this new lightsaber and feel like a Jedi myself! Hopefully, one day the average person will be able to one themselves.
