Welcome back to our wandering trip through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- March 9.
March 9th was a huge day in Disney history, with new film releases, parade debuts and more. So, let’s get into it!
Splash Released (1984)
On this day in 1984, Splash was released.
Starring Daryl Hannah, Tom Hanks and John Candy, the film tells the story of a young man who seeks out, and falls in love, with a mermaid who saved him from drowning 20 years earlier.
Splash is notable for being Disney’s first release under the Touchstone Pictures imprint, which was created to allow Disney to produce non-G-rated movies.
Main Street Electrical Parade Debuts in Tokyo (1985)
On this day in 1985, Tokyo Disneyland’s Main Street Electrical Parade debuted.
The procession was essentially a carbon copy of the original Disneyland Electrical Parade.
Beauty and the Beast On Broadway Begins Previews (1994)
On this day in 1994, previews for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast began on Broadway.
The show would eventually open on April 18.
Luck of the Irish Airs (2001)
On this day in 2001, the Disney Channel Original Movie The Luck of the Irish aired.
The film told the story of a teenager who must protect his family from being controlled by an evil leprechaun.
Winnie the Pooh: Springtime With Roo Released (2004)
On this day in 2004, Disney’s Winnie the Pooh: Springtime with Roo was released on DVD.
In the film, Roo is upset when Rabbit cancels Easter. The film then follows the plot of “A Christmas Carol” and Rabbit learns the error of his ways.
Disney’s Block Party Bash Debuts (2008)
On this day in 2008, Disney’s Block Party Bash made its debut at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The parade featured Pixar characters from Toy Story, Monsters Inc, A Bug’s Life and The Incredibles.
John Carter Released To Theaters (2012)
On this day in 2012, John Carter was released in theaters.
The film was largely based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ book A Princess of Mars.
In the film a Civil War vet named John Carter is transplanted to Mars.
Festival of Fantasy Debuts (2014)
On this day in 2014, Festival of Fantasy debuted at the Magic Kingdom.
The park’s new daytime parade features a giant steampunk dragon that breathes fire!
A Wrinkle in Time Released (2018)
On this day in 2018, A Wrinkle in Time was released.
Based on the 1962 novel of the same name, the film starred Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling.
Mulan Premiers (2020)
Finally, on this day in 2020, Disney’s live-action Mulan premiered in Los Angeles.
On hand for the festivities were stars Liu Yifei, Tzi Ma and Donnie Yen. The release of the film would eventually be postponed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
