This Day in Disney History- February 15
Welcome back to our magical trip through the history of the Walt Disney Company! Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- February 15.
February 15th featured the release of an absolute Disney classic, a new sequel, and the loss of a Disney Legend. So, let’s get started!
Orphan’s Picnic Released (1936)
On this day in 1936, the Mickey Mouse short Orphan’s Picnic was released.
Directed by Ben Sharpsteen, the cartoon featured Donald Duck supervising a group of rowdy orphans at Mickey’s picnic.
Cinderella Released (1950)
On this day in 1950, Disney’s Cinderella was released.
The studio’s 12th animated feature film, Cinderella was based on the fairy tale “Cendrillon” by Charles Perraut.
In the film, when Cinderella is prevented from attending the royal ball by her wicked step-mother, she receives help from her Fairy Godmother.
Widely considered to be Disney’s best animated film, Cinderella also introduced the songs “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes“. “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo” and “So This is Love”.
The New Team Disney Anaheim Opens (1996)
On this day in 1996, the new Team Disney Anaheim building opened behind Disneyland.
The new administrative building was designed by architect Frank Gehry and would eventually be the workplace of 1,200 employees.
Return to Never Land Released (2002)
On this day in 2002, Return to Never Land was released in theaters.
A sequel to the Disney classic Peter Pan, the film see’s Wendy’s daughter, Jane, is kidnapped by Captain Hook and taken to Never Land. Luckily Peter Pan arrives in time to save her.
Live-Action Kim Possible Airs (2019)
On this day in 2019, a live-action Kim Possible film aired on the Disney Channel.
Based on the animated series of the same name, the film starred Sadie Stanley as Kim Possible and Sean Giambrone as Ron Stoppable. In the film, the duo must contend with a returning Drakken and Sheo.
Dave Smith Passes Away (2019)
Also on this day in 2019, Walt Disney Archives founder Dave Smith passed away at age 78.
Smith was originally hired by Roy. O. Disney in 1970 and worked for the company for 40 years before retiring in 2010. Smith was named a Disney Legend in 2007.
