Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Introduces Beni the Okapi to Pembe Savanna
Guests witnessed a magical moment at Walt Disney World Resort recently. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge introduced Beni the Okapi to the Pembe Savanna!
Beni the Okapi
Beni was born in July to mom Olivia. His arrival was serendipitous, as he came right before World Okapi Day in October.

The adorable calf is the 12th born at Walt Disney World and the 5th at Animal Kingdom Lodge. In addition, he was the 1st to be born at the Resort since 2018.
Introduction to Pembe Savanna
Today, Disney Parks Blog gave fans an update on the endearing creature. Disney’s team of animal experts wanted to start the new year off with a bang, by introducing Beni to the Savanna!

The animal used caution as he explored all of the new sights and smells in his surroundings. His mom Olivia provided the spark he needed, nudging him on from behind.
Currently, Beni stands at 4 feet tall and weighs 230 pounds. Although he prefers the security of his mom’s presence, he’s slowly but surely becoming more independent.

His personality is beginning to emerge little by little, each day, as he grows. It’s always a magical sight for caretakers to see an animal step onto the savanna for the very first time.
Viewing wild animals like Beni helps inspire Guests to learn and care about lesser-known creatures. Beni’s care team has worked hard for several months, in preparation for the exciting day!

Okapis are an endangered species. Found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, they use camouflage to blend into the rainforest.
That being said, it’s a treat for Guests to be able to view these creatures out in the open! Beni is Olivia’s first calf.

His birth was part of a Survival Plan to ensure the responsible breeding of threatened species in managed environments. Disney is dedicated to protecting okapis as well as their forests.
The Disney Conservation Fund helps monitor the species in the wild. It also contributes to reducing deforestation and supporting the well-being of communities that live near the species.
