National Geographic Speaker, Steve Winter, Helps Celebrate World Tiger Day!
Today is World Tiger Day and Disney parks is honoring and celebrating these majestic animals with National Geographic Live speaker, award-winning photographer and author Steve Winter.
Winter grew up in Indiana and at a young age and dreamed of traveling the world as a photographer for National Geographic.
He received his first camera at age 7 and fulfilled his dream as an award-winning story teller for National Geographic Magazine.
He has worked on three big cat documentaries for Nat Geo WILD and published the National Geographic book Tigers Forever: Saving the World’s Most Endangered Big Cat.
Winter has covered the lives of big cats for over 25 years and has a new book coming out this Fall.
International Travels
Steve travels all around the world capturing awe-inspiring images and creating unique documentaries of these majestic cats.
“I always say I didn’t choose big cats, big cats chose me,” Steve says.
His goal is to visually capture the beauty, intelligence and behaviors of wildlife. But he also captures the scientists, humans, and global industries that impact the animals’ lives and the ecosystems in which they reside.
Inspiring Through the Lens
“Tigers are now the most endangered large cat on earth. To bring attention to their plight, I’ve tried to use the power of photography and storytelling to educate readers and spark change that will ensure their long-term survival,” Steve says.
Photographing tigers in the wild is difficult, and most times, tigers don’t want to be found.
Steve utilizes remote “camera traps” on trails and places where the cats live and use an infrared beam system to capture the perfect photo.
Winter shared with Disney Parks Blog, “They’re very secretive animals. One of the only places you can see tigers is in India. In Indonesia, if you go looking for the Sumatran tiger, you’ll never see one.”
Tigers have lost almost 95% of their natural habitat due to deforestation and natural habitat loss.
Winter hopes to share his experiences and photos to inspire others and bring value to Tigers and their existence.
“I hope with these pictures I’m able to share images we haven’t seen before, images that capture this animal’s stunning beauty and habits, and show why its existence is so precarious. I hope these pictures inspire you to act, to do something to help save it.”
Be sure to hear Steve’s inspiring stories and journey on National Geographic Live.
