Thor Box Office Revenue Down 68% in Week 2
Marvel’s fourth Thor-focused film – Love and Thunder took a mighty plummet at the box office going into week two. According to a recent piece in Forbes, revenue was down 68% this weekend which is quite a drop for a big summer box office film.
Forbes likens this heavy decline to Batman & Robin which dropped 64% back in 1997! But that being said, its not all doom and gloom. The film is still on target to gross over $300 million at the domestic box office and $700 million worldwide. Only in the world of the box office juggernaut that is the MCU could this be seen as lackluster.
So what was the cause of the rapid drop in box office numbers? One of the causes may be the film getting lukewarm reviews from audiences and critics alike. The film currently has a 68% approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com. Add this to the fact that Disney has already said that they hope to have the film on Disney+ within 45 days of cinematic release and it may simply be a case of audiences, seeing the lower reviews, opting to wait until they can watch the film at home.
As Forbes points out, one thing that the film does have in its favor is that another big box office action film isn’t slated to be released until September 23rd when Avatar 2 hits theaters. This means that the film still has the potential to be a slow but study burn throughout the rest of the summer.
It should also be noted that Thor: Ragnarok also directed to Taika Waititi only brought in about $321 million at the box office meaning that the fourth film doesn’t show a dramatic drop for Thor films as a whole. However, undoubtedly the film has failed to match the runaway success that was Spider-Man: No Way Home which soared well past the $1 billion mark.
