Disneyland’s Emporium Window Display Celebrates Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog you’ll know that May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. One of the ways that Disneyland is celebrating is with a new window display honoring Children’s Day at the Emporium on Main Street U.S.A.
For those unfamiliar, Children’s Day is celebrated in many cultures including Japan and South Korea. Children’s Day is celebrated in Japan and is a day for parents to wish for prosperity for their children and to look to a bright future according to Hiroe Salto, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Food and Beverage production manager.
The window was a collaboration between Disneyland Resort Enhancement Team in conjunction with COMPASS, a business employee resource group that is dedicated to advocating, celebrating and educating on behalf of the AANHPI community.
The display features Victorian-era furniture and traditional games from a variety of different AANHPI cultures. Brianna Mitjans, a Resort Enhancement cast member who worked on the window said, “I centered it around a Japanese family celebrating Children’s Day and showcased all of the games they collected during their travels, which are from various AANHPI cultures.”
In the windows you’ll see a variety of traditional games from different cultures including Sungka (Philippines), Traditional Indian Chess, Mahjong (China), Konane (Hawaiian Islands & Polynesia), Nei-pat-ko-no (Korea) and Kendama (Japan) can be found in the window.
Also be on the lookout for koinobori which are carp streamers. These are flown to symbolize willpower and success in reference to an old Chinese story of the carps’ strength and determination to swim upstream. This is according to COMPASS co-chair Allie Kawamoto.
Throughout the month, Disneyland is encouraging guests and cast members to rise together like the koinobori to honor the many traditions of contributions AANHPI communities.
