Los Angeles County Requires Masks on Transportation
Los Angeles County requires masks, once again, on all public transit. This includes buses, trains, taxis, and other service vehicles. Also, individuals must wear masks at all indoor public transportation hubs, such as airports and bus terminals.
Masks, Essential for Indoors?
The decision, based on a new COVID-19 health order, takes effect on Friday, April 22, 2022. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), masks are still essential for COVID-19 prevention.

Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said, “They (the CDC) are experts. They made a determination that at this point having that requirement in place is necessary for the public’s health, and that resonates with us.”

On Wednesday, a Floridian federal judge denounced the government’s rule that requires masks on public transportation, especially airplanes. The CDC urged the U.S. Department of Justice to appeal this ruling. In response, the CDC said, indoor masks remain “necessary for public health.”

Interestingly enough, Los Angeles County announced optional masks in response to this ruling in Florida. However, this current mask mandate took effect (once again) on Friday, April 22, 2022, at 12:01 a.m.
Constant Confusion
Barbara Ferrer apologizes since the new order causes confusion among residents due to constantly changing rules. However, she reminds individuals that the CDC never changed its recommendations; therefore, Los Angeles County requires masks on transportation, again.
The agency said, “CDC will continue to monitor public health conditions to determine whether such an order remains necessary. CDC believes this is a lawful order, well within CDC’s legal authority to protect public health.”

Spreading the Virus
Ferrer stressed that the COVID-19 is still spreading quite a bit, especially in the BA.2 subvariant. The subvariant represents 84% of all local cases. However, there has not been an increase in hospitalizations due to the virus.

As a reminder, Ferrer stated that the virus “is still equated with significant illness for some people. It still can cause, even for people who experience mild illness when they first get infected, for a good percentage of people ‘long COVID.'”
