Impressive Opening Weekend Lost for West Side Story
Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story did not have an impressive opening weekend. The numbers fell flat as the film made $4.1 million on Friday, $3.8 million on Saturday, and a weekend total of $10.5 million (as of Sunday morning).
However, it is important to note that West Side Story’s race is a marathon, not a sprint. This is especially the case since the production cost surpassed $100 million.
A Hopeful Future
After all, West Side Story’s CinemaScore is an A, it has 4.5 stars on PostTrak, and Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 70% definite recommend and 93% certified fresh. The question is…why would Disney release a movie THIS weekend?
Viewers tend to visit theaters closer to Christmas. Be reminded, Disney made this wise choice with Mary Poppins Returns, and it made $15.5 million over its first five days.
On the other hand, West Side Story is not that far off from the opening day of Mary Poppins Returns. The Mary Poppins film earned $4.7 million on its first day in theaters.
Accordingly, experts believe West Side Story will catch up in the long run. It may take a couple of weeks before it increases profitability, however.
Possible Hurdles
A possible problem is many people are currently busy due to the holiday season. Also, some may not come out because of the pandemic and the uptick in COVID-19 cases.
Keep in mind that Disney released West Side Story while our society fights a pandemic, and it was originally created for a different audience during a different time. However, you should see West Side Story on the big screen due to its visual immersion.
A Fun Break During a Busy Time
West Side Story is full of toe-tapping songs that stay in your memory long after leaving the theater. Also, there are whispers of awards for the film when the time comes, regardless of the less than impressive opening weekend.
If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, then go watch West Side Story at your local theater. I have a feeling you wouldn’t regret it!
