Netflix Honors Chadwick Boseman With $5.4 Million Contribution Toward Howard University Scholarship
One of the great tragedies that have occurred in the film world was the untimely death of one of the industry’s brightest young stars, and one of the biggest streaming entities has shown their appreciation as Netflix honors, Chadwick Boseman, with a $5.4 million contribution toward Howard University scholarship.
The Howard University Alumn, Boseman had carved out an exceptional career in well known and critically adored films; his legacy is undeniable, and his impact on the projects he contributed toward is unmatched.
His memory, and his legacy, will both live on within, not only the people who he worked with, or the people he touched with his work, but also with the lives he will change through a commemorative scholarship at his alma mater in his name.
This scholarship now has even greater potential for change thanks to support from one of the film industries giants, as Netflix honors Chadwick Boseman with a $5.4 Million contribution toward this Howard University Scholarship.
The Washington D.C.-based University confirmed Monday that the Streaming and distribution studio committed the $5.4 Million as the first donor to the now officially named, Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship.
The news was first reported by WTOP News, noting the scholarship was Established by Boseman’s wife, Simone Ledward-Boseman, in conjunction with the University seeking to honor one of their most vital alumni.
In a prepared statement, Leward Boseman stated, “Many exemplary artists are not afforded the opportunity to pursue higher learning, we hope to support as many students as possible by removing the financial barrier to education.”
She continued, “This endowment represents Chad’s devotion to the craft, his compassion for others and his desire to support future storytellers.”
The late actor passed away to colon cancer last year at the all too young age of 43; Boseman was a critical fixture of the MCU with his work as T’Challa in Black Panther and the Avengers films.
The Washington Post reported the scholarship has already helped four students; studying Acting, musical theater, theater arts administration, and dance.
Walt Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger has also begun efforts to honor the late Disney collaborator, as WTOP News reported the executing is leading fundraising efforts for a brand new facility to aid the schools operations, as well as financial contributions toward a Chadwick Boseman College of Fine Arts.
Performances in legendary biopics celebrating black lives such as 42, Get on Up and Marshall, have established Boseman’s as one of cinema history’s greatest and most vital black voices.
While his work with Netflix includes Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, and the Viola Davis starring Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom that signifies the actor’s incomparable contribution to the streaming services’ exemplary legacy; with the former earning the performer posthumous Academy Award recognition.
Chadwick Boseman will forever be missed, and this gesture by Netflix is a beautiful act to honor the immense talent and accolades that represent the late actor.
