This Week in Disney Headlines for June 18, 2021
Have you ever noticed the lack of mirrors in Disney bathrooms? Did someone you know pose as a Disney Princess?
Did you hear about the new Marvel digital offering coming soon? How about 2020 gun stats at Walt Disney World?
We’ve got several fascinating Disney Headlines this week. You’ll want to read them all!
Why Doesn’t Disney Use Mirrors?
We’ve previously discussed the lack of mosquitoes at Walt Disney World, which seems impossible for former swampland.
Well, Disney does something else that has caused quite the internet stir this week.
A MentalFloss author recently learned that Disney doesn’t position mirrors above the sinks in most theme park bathrooms.
Have you ever noticed this oddity? It’s unusual, to be sure. The next time you’re at a restaurant or movie theater or sports stadium, go to the bathroom.
You’ll notice a mirror above the sink. Its presence helps you primp so that you’ll look your best as you exit the facilities.
Disney doesn’t do that for a specific reason. When people look in the mirror, they tend to fix their hair or tuck in their shirt or adjust their makeup.
In short, they slow down to enhance their appearance. Such behavior causes bottlenecks at bathroom sinks.
So, Disney rarely places mirrors in these places in bathrooms. If you see one, it’s almost always near the door, away from the flow of traffic.
Disney theme parks are extremely well designed. Imagineers really do think of everything!
#SlatePitch – ‘Ohana Noodles Suck
Are you familiar with the Slate Pitch meme? As a writer, I’ve used it for more than a decade now.
The premise involves Slate’s clickbait practices. Controversial articles do better, thereby encouraging writers to craft horrible #hottakes.
The New York Yankees deserve to be loved, but not for the reasons you think. #slatepitches

A #SlatePitch is an idea that no sane person would believe, yet some writer spends a thousand words arguing that up is down.
A recent example capitalizes on the outcry coming from Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.
The hotel just announced that ‘Ohana will return next month. However, the initial post didn’t list the famous noodle dish as one of the menu items.
This writer published the following headline: Disney World ‘Ohana Noodles Canceled. The interior article doubled down by saying: ‘Ohana Noodles Aren’t Even Very Good.
Ordinarily, I would link to the article, but that just encourages more #SlatePitches. So, I’m drawing a line in the sand here. You can google if you’re interested.
I will use this fabulous tweet to reinforce the outcry over the lack of ‘Ohana Noodles on the menu at first:

Thankfully, Disney has since stated that the restaurant will serve its delectable ‘Ohana Noodles again when it reopens in July.

Disney Security Is a Thing, Morons!
The Orlando Sentinel posted some alarming data the other day. More people have tried to bring guns into Disney theme parks than ever before.
There’s something about the pandemic that made people lose their ever-lovin’ minds.
To wit, in 2016, Disney’s Orlando theme parks caught and arrested a total of four people trying to bring weapons to the Most Magical Place on Earth.
Last year, more than 20 different would-be park guests wound up behind bars.
Now, I interpret this data differently from some other Disney analysts. I believe it’s a sign that security protocols have improved.
So, more people get caught with their weapons than had been the case in the past. The Pulse nightclub tragedy forced Disney to take added precautions.
Even with that optimistic evaluation, more people got caught with loaded weapons than should ever happen at a theme park.
According to the article, one individual brought 100 rounds of ammunition (!) to the park, where security officials quickly captured him.
The security alarms went nuts at the notification of that much ammo and a handgun.
Other instances are a bit more innocent. People who wear strapped pieces for their jobs merely forgot to remove them before heading to Disney.
Not every situation involving a weapon leads to an arrest at Walt Disney World. Security officials judge whether there’s intent by the holder.
Still, I’m more thankful than ever that Disney has added a superior security system at three of its Orlando parks this year.
Marvel Will Offer NFTs
Here’s a somewhat unexpected announcement. You may have recently read that the NFT market has collapsed.
The inscrutable nature of NFTs has proved troublesome in marketing various items. It’s the same issue that cryptocurrency faced during its earliest days.
In truth, crypto still suffers a bit when people try to explain it today. And crypto looks like a reliable, stable currency compared to Non-Fungible Tokens.
Even the most diehard supporters expect mercurial trends during the early days of NFTs, assuming they last that long.
For this reason, the market recently suffered a near-90 percent collapse in value!
Do you know what could stabilize the market? Marvel could get involved, and that’s precisely what is happening!
Marvel posted a press release indicating that Marvel Fan tokens will allow creators to profit off their published works.
However, you can use other tokens, as Marvel and Binance have crafted a unique marketplace complete with economic flexibility.
Presumably, fans will get to purchase memorable moments from Marvel Comics and possibly even stuff from the MCU.
Nobody’s quite sure how Disney will approach this, as the concept of an NFT remains so nebulous right now.

Disney Princess News
Have you turned yourself into a Disney Princess on Snapchat yet? The internet lost its collective mind when the service added Cartoon 3D Style Lens.
This mod turns your picture into something akin to a background character from a Disney animated movie.
In a matter of days, 215 million (!) Snapchat users turned themselves into toons. An estimated 1.7 billion (!!!) viewed the app and its result.
This viral behavior unintentionally created a spillover effect on TikTok. People turned its version of cartoon face mods into Disney Princess clips.
The Voila AI Artist isn’t quite as good, but TikTok and Instagram users have access to it, while Cartoon 3D Style Lens is a Snapchat exclusive.
Here’s one demonstration of the app in action. You’ve gotta try this!
@mjh_12 this made my inner child scream #disney #animatemefilter #bisexual #lgbt🏳️🌈❤️
Finally, while we’re on the subject of Disney Princesses, PETA made an unexpected request for the live-action version of The Little Mermaid.
PETA doesn’t want craft services to serve fish dishes to cast members. You can read the press release here.
The important snippet is, “Ariel would recoil with horror at the thought of eating her pelagic pals.”
Later, the press release concludes, “PETA’s message to Disney is simple: Fish are our friends—not hors d’œuvres.”
