Delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film marks the first solo film for the Avenger. The narrative sets out to explore her origin story, including her past in Russia before joining SHIELD as an agent. A gifted spy and orphan, Romanoff joined Russian forces as a young woman. In the comics, the Hand attempted to brainwash her into an assassin, but she instead joined the Black Widow program.

Previews show Romanoff in the Red Room, a facility where girls trained to become sleeper agents for the Soviet government. Instead, Black Widow eventually defects and joins the Avengers, becoming the life-sacrificing heroine that essentially saves humanity during “Avengers: Endgame,” endearing her to MCU fans forever.

The film also introduces us to a number of new characters who play important roles in Romanoff’s past life. Though Romonaff is an orphan, the Red Guardian (David Harbour) becomes a father-figure to Romanoff and greatly influences her training. Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) also trained in the Red Room to become a Black Widow. In fact, in the comics, she takes on the moniker as a heroine in later storylines.
Another Red Room trainee Melina Vostokova (Rachel Weisz) also plays a major role in the plot for this backstory plot. In the comics, Vostokova and Romanoff have a falling out, but we are not sure where the story line will go in the film.

With today’s clip, we did learn that Black Widow and the other spies must deal with Taskmaster, the controller of the Red Room in the film, as an antagonistic figure.

It is still not clear if Taskmaster is the actual villain in the storyline, or if someone else will rise to challenge Romanoff in her grief-filled past.
