‘Cruella’ Fashion Designer Enraged After Fashion Collaboration
Cruella fashion designer Jenny Beavan was shocked and horrified to discover a Cruella-inspired fashion line had been released without her knowledge. The incident is shedding some light on the disparities that costume designers have been facing for years and is even gaining attention from the Costume Designers Guild.

Beavan, an Academy Award-winning fashion designer, is responsible for the brilliant styles that brought Cruella to life. During production, she recalls having conversations with Disney about collaborating with Target or Singer sewing machines. But once the pandemic hit and production halted, talks of collaborations also came to an end.

Then, about a month ago, Beavan found out about a new fashion line from Rag & Bone in an Instagram post. Her friend asked her if she had anything to do with it, which she didn’t. Her designs were being sold as an “officially licensed Cruella-inspired collection”, but Beavan had no knowledge of and received no compensation for the collaboration.
Salvador Pérez Jr., president of the Costume Designers Guild told Variety:
“Our work is reproduced for toys, costumes, fashion collections and more. Not only are we not allowed to participate in the profits made off of the merchandising, we aren’t even credited for our work on the original designs.”

This unfortunate occurrence is finally shedding some light on the struggles that costume designers have been facing for decades. Beavan’s situation is even garnering attention from the Costume Designers Guild, who called out the industry for it’s long history of “unfair practices”. Jenny Beavan is far from the first fashion designer to face this situation and unfortunately, probably won’t be the last. Perhaps it’s time for some changes in Hollywood.
