Cicely Tyson, Acclaimed Actress Passes Away at the Age of 96
The film and entertainment world is mourning the passing of a legend today, as acclaimed and award-winning, actress Cicely Tyson has passed on.
Her 60+ year career as an actor has seen her recognized as a revolutionary performer, presenting a strong and dignified voice to the African American women she portrayed.
Tyson was inducted into the TV Hall of Fame alongside former Disney CEO, Bob Iger in 2014, and leaves an immense resume behind her.
First debuting in the Harold Young directed Carib Gold, Tyson began her career alongside trailblazing African American performers such as Jazz singer and academy award winner Ethel Waters. Her last appearance in film was in the Tyler Perry directed A Fall From Grace.
Tyson worked in relation to the Disney company multiple times in her career. Lending her voice to the animated series The Proud Family, and playing Constantine Jefferson in the critically acclaimed The Help; a film distributed by the Walt Disney company.
Many fans may not be aware, but Tyson’s handprints lay preserved in the cement outside of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Hollywood Studios. Cast in 1989, the ride was then known as The Great Movie Ride before it was replaced in the summer of 2017.
Tyson will be remembered and beloved by the image of strength and fearlessness she presented to the world; and the embodiment of that strength and fearlessness that she was.
Her voice of encouragement and empowerment to the African American community will never be forgotten, and she will live on in the countless lives she empowered.
The MickeyBlog family mourns her passing as we honor her legacy. Our thoughts are with her family at this time.
