Walt Disney World Cast Member Unions and Government Officials Release Statements Regarding Layoffs
As us here at MickeyBlog.com are shocked and saddened to hear of the layoffs of 28,00 Cast Members in the Parks, Experiences, and Products department of the Walt Disney Company, a Walt Disney World Cast Member Union Coalition; the Service Trades Council; has just released a statement. The Service Trades Council is a coalition made up of six local unions and represent over 40,000 Walt Disney World Cast Members.
In the statement, The Service Trades Council stated:
We were disappointed to learn that the COVID-19 crisis has led Disney to make the decision to layoff Cast Members. How many full-time and part-time Cast Members will be affected, how long health insurance and recall rights will continue and many other issues crucial to Cast Members are on the table. As soon as more information becomes available, we will notify our members.
But the Service Trades Council isn’t the only one to release a statement today regarding the Cast Member layoffs. United States Representative Val Demings, released the following statement as well:
Like so many others over recent months, these layoffs will be devastating for countless people. It’s up to all of us to step up and help in every way we can.
I urge anyone in the 10th District who needs help with federal service to contact my office. We will be working with government and civic partners to provide as much support as possible to these workers and their families, and to all those who are out of work through no fault of their own.
Earlier today, Josh D’Amaro announced that layoffs would be coming to approximately 28,000 Cast Members, of which about 67% are part time, due to the ongoing fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions that continue to keep the Disneyland Resort in California closed.
