Disneyland Attendance in 2019 A Bit Lackluster Despite Opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
2019 was supposed to be a banner year for Disneyland- one that included the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge but according to an industry report, attendance remained flat last year. According to a recent piece in the Orange County Register, global theme park attendance rose 4% in 2019 with 521 million visitors. This according to findings by the Themed Entertainment Association.
These numbers are significant in that they will serve as a goal as theme parks work to rebuild their guests following the global pandemic. Using the same report, we here at MickeyBlog wrote another piece this weekend disclosing that Magic Kingdom was the most attended theme park in the World last year. However, Disneyland failed to see a massive increase in attendance despite the opening of its new Star Wars-themed land. Attendance remained at 18.7 million visitors last year meaning annual visitorship was unchanged from the year prior. The same was seen at Disney California Adventure with 9.9 million visitors.
However, despite the flat figures Disneyland theme park did still manage to come in at second place when it came to the busiest theme park in the world placing it before EPCOT, Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
So how does this stack up against other So-Cal theme parks? Universal Studios Hollywood came in at 9.1 million visitors and Knott’s Berry Farm had a 3% increase due to the revamping of Calico River Rapids. Even SeaWorld San Diego saw an increase in 0.5% uptick in 2019. The piece in the Register tells us that Six Flags Magic Mountain attendance also climbed 0.5% to 3.6 million visitors in 2019.
One of the contributing factors for Disney’s flat attendance in 2019 is due in part to the company’s yield strategy that uses higher ticket prices to manage attendance. Under this plan Disney theme parks admit fewer guests but charge more for a better overall experience.
With COVID-19 shuttering theme parks around the world, and Disneyland’s reopening plans still in question due to the increase in COVID-19 cases, It may be a few years before we are reporting on numbers like this again. Keep following along with us for further Disney theme park news and updates!
