Primeval Whirl, Where Did You Go?
If there’s one thing that you can say about the Primeval Whirl attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, it has long divided Disney fans. Located in the Dinoland U.S.A section of the theme park, this attraction frequently tops the list of the rides most likely to give you motions sickness. Disney describes it as an attraction suitable for visitors 48″ or taller that “sweeps you through a series of sudden dips and turns as your time machine spins on its own path. Whiz by cartoon dinosaurs hastily preparing for their impending extinction and glimpse a shower of kooky meteors.” However, what it fails to mention is that it spins a lot! Like if someone put a spinning teacup turning rapidly on a roller coaster track (you get the picture.)
Now it looks as if the ride may be spinning itself into extinction. During our visit to Animal Kingdom today, we noticed that the ride no longer appears on the Guide Map to Animal Kingdom theme park.
As you can see from the map above, TriceraTop Spin is numbered on the map however, the neighboring attraction Primeval Whirl is not included in the guide. Nor the description (see below).
Now, to be fair, we announced the end of last year that Primeval Whirl would be moving to a Seasonal Schedule similar to what they did with Stitch’s Great Escape at Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom. The Guide Maps are updated regularly so it may be added in again once it is reopened. However, there have been rumors circulating for ages about what the future might hold for this attraction.
Its not surprising given that Primeval Whirl takes up a prime bit of theme park real estate. It would be a shame to see this area of the park underutilized. We’ve heard a handful of rumors over the past year regarding what might replace it including another roller coaster in the same vein as Big Thunder Mountain or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, an Indiana Jones attraction or perhaps something themed around the Ice Age films since Disney now owns the rights.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for this attraction. Its a story that we’ll definitely be following closely here at MickeyBlog so keep checking back with us for further news and updates.
