Disney CEO Stresses the Importance of ‘Hamilton’ for Disney+ and During This Time In Our Country’s History
It’s hard to believe that it was just a week ago that Hamilton made its debut on Disney+. With everyone clamoring to watch it, and the Broadway musical becoming a talking point, this was and still is a massive title for Disney’s streaming network. According to audio of a recent staff meeting, Disney believes in the importance of the project as well. In audio clips obtained by The Verge, CEO Bob Chapek can be heard stressing that Hamilton brought a lot of new subscribers to Disney, playing a role in Disney+’s growth and was an important piece for the currently climate in the country.
Though subscriber numbers have yet to be revealed, he did tell employees that there were a lot of them. He was also joined by newly appointed head of streaming Rebecca Campbell who noted that Hamilton was able to accomplish a much bigger task – bringing people in that maybe previously weren’t interested in Disney.
Chapek went on to discuss the decision to release the film NOW on Disney+ rather than in cinemas next year as originally intended. He said, “I think it was so impactful because in such a divided country, in such a divided world, there are few things that fit in that Venn diagram in the middle that sort of please everybody and bring us together rather than push us apart. ” He added, “I think that’s what the magic of Disney can do. I think that’s the magic of the brand can do. Certainly, what the affinity to the Hamilton product can do for the world and especially for the United States right now. The message of diversity that’s implicit in the production really gives us hope for a better, more unified tomorrow.”
According to the piece in The Verge data coming in from third party firms reveal that Hamilton was a massive success for the company in terms of engagement and subscriber additions. But Chapek also noted that just as important is the “global conversations taking place about anti-racism and the need for more diverse companies.”
We expect number to start coming in for Hamilton soon and will keep you posted as soon as we know more. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see if Disney keeps the momentum going from Hamilton’s resounding success when it comes to continuing to bring more diverse content to Disney+
