Disneyland Employee Unions Ask Not to Open
Everyone is excited about both Walt Disney World and Disneyland re-opening in July. It is a long awaited event and even with the new safety guidelines and restrictions and changes, many guests will be at the parks. But, the employees of Disney in Anaheim are not as eager.
This week a coalition of Disneyland employee unions representing 17,000 Disneyland cast members send a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom asking for the theme parks not to open on July 17th out of concern for employee safety.
“Disney wants clearance from the government to reopen the Disneyland Resort in July,” according to the letter from the Coalition of Resort Labor Unions. “Unfortunately, despite intensive talks with the company, we are not yet convinced that it is safe to reopen the parks on Disney’s rapid timetable.” (ocregister.com)
The current proposal has Downtown Disney opening July 9th, Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure on July 17th and Disney’s Grand Californian and Paradise Pier hotels opening on July 23rd. This proposal is pending government approval. The parks and hotels have been closed since mid-March due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
“The safety and wellbeing of our cast members and guests are at the forefront of our planning, and we look forward to continued dialogue with our unions on the extensive health and safety protocols, following guidance from public health experts, which we plan to implement as we move toward our proposed, phased reopening,” a Disneyland official said in a statement. The Florida parks are on schedule to open July 11th and Disney Springs has already opened.
