BREAKING NEWS: Kevin Mayer Leaves Disney To Become CEO of Tik-Tok
There’s been a shake-up over at Disney HQ this afternoon with several announcements hitting the wire regarding executive departures and promotions at the Walt Disney Company. As part of the changing dynamic, Kevin Mayer previous head of direct-to-consumer and international for Walt Disney is leaving the company to become the CEO of TikTok.
Some insiders think this move comes after being passed over for Bob Iger’s job as CEO to the company which went to Bob Chapek earlier this year.
Mayer’s successor has already been lined up. That job will go to recently appointed Disneyland President Rebecca Campbell who previously moving into the spot vacated by Josh D’Amaro. Campbell is well-suited for the post having worked in leadership roles for the company’s media, international and parks businesses.
According to his bio, Mayer joined The Walt Disney Company back in 2005. Prior to his post as Chairman of Direct-To-Consumer and International, Mayer served as senior vice president and chief strategy officer. During his tenure, Mayer has overseen Disney’s key strategic acquisitions including Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and BAMTECH, as well as the recent acquisition of 21st Century Fox.
CEO Bob Chapek had this to say of Mayer’s departure, “ Mayer has had an extraordinary impact on our company [and] … done a masterful job of overseeing and growing our portfolio of streaming services, while bringing together the creative and technological assets required to launch the hugely successful Disney+ globally. Having worked alongside Kevin for many years on the senior management team, I am enormously grateful to him for his support and friendship and wish him tremendous success going forward.”
Mayer also said of his time with the company, “I am very proud of what our extraordinarily talented Direct-to-Consumer and International team has accomplished in creating and delivering a world-class portfolio of streaming services, particularly Disney+,” said Mayer.
