An Updated “Doogie Howser M.D.” With a Female Lead Is Heading to Disney+
If you grew up in the 80s (like me) then no doubt you remember the much-loved ABC dramedy Doogie Howser M.D. Today reports are surfacing that Disney is reviving the show for their new Disney+ network. With a twist of course!
According to a recent piece in The Hollywood Reporter, the show currently has a working title of Doogie Kealoha, M.D., and comes from Kourtney Kang of How I Met Your Mother and Fresh Off the Boat. Now that Disney owns 20th Century Fox (the producers of the original show) the new Doogie will also be filmed at the studio.
The project’s main character will be a 16-year-old half-Asian and half-white girl who is a genius and has graduated from medical school early and is now working as a doctor in Hawaii.
The original Doogie Howser M.D. was created by Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley and ran on ABC from 1983-1993. Neil Patrick Harris who would later work with Kang on How I Met Your Mother played the lead character. The cast also included Max Castella, Lisa Dean Ryan and Lucy Broyer as Doogies friends and James B. Sikking and Belinda Montgomery as his parents.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will stay in the Bochco family with his widow and son Jesse serving as executive producers on the updated version.
Doogie Kealoha is just one of an ever-growing repertoire of shows that Disney is currently working on for its streaming network. Here at MickeyBlog we’ve also mentioned that Turner & Hooch and The Mighty Ducks are both getting new series. Disney also announced the revival of another favorite The Proud Family as well as a prequel series for Beauty and the Beast.
As of going to print, we aren’t sure how each of the projects above will be impacted by the COVID-19 shutdown of the entertainment industries. Readers are encouraged to keep following along with MickeyBlog for the latest Walt Disney World news and updates!
