#BoysCanBePrincessesToo Celebrates Gender Expression With A Big Dose of Disney Flair
#BoysCanBePrincessesToo is a new campaign that helps promote gender expression by furthering the idea that dressing up as a Disney princess shouldn’t have gender barriers.
The idea behind the campaign is that men should be able to wear dresses if you want to! Boys Can Be Princesses Too actively seeks to spread the message of acceptance.
The campaign recently drew attention on Twitter sparking a debate about gender expression. Some users initially discussed how it made them feel uncomfortable with others supporting the cause.
The project was founded by Kitty, who photographs boys dressed up as their favorite princesses along with the actual princess. On the website, Kitty highlights the mission of the project, Our goal here is to show these boys and the world that it is perfectly acceptable for boys to admire and even dress like princesses. I want to show them it’s OK for boys to dress up as their heroes, even if that means they’re twirling around in a ball gown. Overall, I want everyone to see it’s OK to be who you are and like what you like!”
The campaign also drew comparisons between two public figures at the forefront of gender expression.
Actor Billy Porter is helping to broaden what’s masculine. Recently he drew attention for the tuxedo/gown he wore to the Oscars. Another star working toward the same goal is Jonathan Van Ness from Queer Eye who day in and day out isn’t afraid to explore both the masculine and feminine sides of himself.
