Disney’s Live-Action Lion King Roars Into Theaters Earning $24 Million On Thursday

Though Disney’s live-action version of The Lion King has divided critics, audiences seem largely on board the movie Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Donald Glover, Beyonce, Seth Rogan and more, the film earned an impressive $24 million beating live-action release Beauty and the Beast which earned $16.3 million on it’s first Thursday. It also beat out Incredibles 2 which earned $18.5 on it’s Thursday opening.

Though it doesn’t constitute a July Thursday opening box office record, Lion King still sits above Captain Marvel which earned $20.2 million on its first day and sits just under Black Panther‘s $25.2 million Thursday opening.

By all accounts, Simba and the gang are preparing for a roarsome weekend. Reports surfaced earlier this month the film was the second biggest pre-seller of 2019 behind Avengers: Endgame. Though critics have been very mixed with the film (it currently sits with a 55% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes) fans seem to be in favor with an 89% approval rating.

According to a recent report in DEADLINE Lion King opens today in over 4,725 theaters becoming the widest domestic theatrical release of all-time, unseating Avengers: Endgame‘s first-weekend record of 4,662 theaters. Abroad Lion King has already roared past $100M, with the majority of that being Chinese attendance. It will be interesting to see how the film performs as a result. Could it be a record-breaker?
