Meet Purl-A Pixar Character Like None You’ve Ever Seen Before
A bit of buzz was generated Monday with the release of Pixar Animation Studio’s newest short Purl. This latest Pixar offering is part of SparkShorts, an experimental storytelling initiative that welcomes new voices to the studio to share their stories.
Purl follows the title character (who happens to be a ball of yarn) as she arrives at her first day of work at B.R.O. Capital as she strives to be considered “one of the guys.” Find out how far Purl will go to fit in during this short from director Kristen Lester and producer Gillian Libbert-Duncan.
Check out Purl in its entirety below. Parents take note! The content of Purl is a bit more adult-focused:
The SparkShorts Program is an initiative designed to uncover new stories to be told, new storytellers and new techniques in storytelling. Jim Morris, president of Pixar Animation Studios had this to say about the project, “These films are unlike anything we’ve ever done at Pixar, providing an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than our normal fare.”
In addition to Purl, two new additional SparkShorts films are slated to be released in the weeks ahead. The first, Smash and Grab is directed by Brian Larsen and David Lally and tells the story of a pair of antiquated robots who risk everything for freedom and for each other after years spent toiling away inside the engine room of a locomotive. It will be available on YouTube beginning February 11th.
The second film Kitbull is directed by Rosana Sullivan and produced by Kathryn Hendrickson. It looks at the unlikely friendship between a stray kitten and pit bull. You’ll find it on YouTube beginning on February 18th.
These trios along with future SparkShorts releases will also be available on Disney+, The Walt Disney Company’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service, which is set to launch in the U.S. later this year. For more information on Disney+ check out this article.

I personally didn’t care for it(Purl). The comment about “pricks” being in BMW’s. The stereotypical portrayal lately of men who are always rude and insensitive to women is getting old. I have a daughter and a son. I love them both differently because they are two different human beings, but I love them equally. As a mother of a young man, I am tired of seeing women who can only trash men in the media. It doesn’t empower you to belittle someone else. There was a better way to get whatever point across they were trying to achieve. Too bad I quit watching it before that point was made.
