Disney Donates $20 Million To Block Expansion of Casino Gambling in Florida
According to a recent piece in Bloomberg, Disney has invested $20 million to block an expansion of casino gambling in the state of Florida. If approved, and in a move that is dividing Florida residents and businesses, Amendment 3 under the Florida Constitution would halt the construction of new casinos unless 60% of the state agrees to the measure.
Seminole Tribe
for the initiative. In the case of the Seminole Tribe, a massive influx in casino-related business could threaten the livelihood of their federally regulated casinos. However, Amendment 3 is not without its opposition, organizations like MGM Resorts International as well as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have spoken out against the initiative.
Gradual Movement
A gradual movement toward more gambling based facilities is slowly taking place in Florida with individual counties looking into the potential of casinos and other types of gaming like legalized slot machines. Should Amendment 3 pass, Disney would keep its place as the focal point of Orlando family-friendly tourism with limiting the threat from more adult-focused attractions/businesses.
Yes or No?
So how does Amendment 3 sit with Florida residents? It would seem like Disney’s investment is working. According to Bloomberg, in a Florida Chamber of Commerce poll conducted last month, 54% of those polled said they would vote “YES” in support of the amendment, 28% “NO” and 18% were uncertain.
