Disney Travelers Share Their Most Embarrassing Moments
If you claim wanderlust as one of your many ailments with no cure, you know traveling isn’t always peachy. In fact, most of the time, it is the mishaps that make for the best stories. And while Disney World, Disneyland and Disney Cruises all offer endless magic once you’re venturing through their parks or ships, human error definitely contributes to some face plants along the way for most Disney travelers.
But hey, if you can’t laugh at yourself—or your friends—who can? Take these ebbs in stride so you can continue to flow through your vacation, no matter how many stumbles you weed through along the way. If you need reassurance that you’re doing just fine (because duh, you are)—let these embarrassing tales comfort you. And hey, don’t forget to share your own in the comments!
“That time I booked a return ticket for the wrong date.”
For traveler Amy Nichols, getting to Disney wasn’t the issue—her and her family counted down for months. Rather, it was leaving Florida that provided the hiccup. “After months of planning, my daughter and son were so excited to meet characters and ride the rides.
We even had custom t-shirts made. But on our last day, while we were heading to the airport, all packed up and sunburned, I tried to check into our flight. When I couldn’t, I asked my husband to help… and he realized we booked a departure date for a year later, instead of the year we went.
After some laughs and an email to their teachers, we were able to leave the next day without spending too much money. The kids enjoyed a day at a hotel and it is a vacation end I’ll never forget!”
“That time I got sick on Splash Mountain.”
Yikes—it is a fear everyone has if their stomach isn’t prepared for thrillers. But does it actually, well, happen? According to one traveler, who prefers to stay anonymous, it sure does. As he explains, “I was traveling with my high school girlfriend through Disney World and SeaWorld, and we were having a bit too much fun.
We got these giant ice cream sundaes and then our FastPass let us know it was our turn for Splash Mountain. When we ran over, I knew my stomach hurt, but I didn’t realize how much. In the middle of the ride, I felt it coming. We were at the back of the cart and I didn’t get anything on anyone but myself. It was so gross.”
“That time I asked a Disney character out—and got rejected.”
When it was time for Laura Holt’s best friend to get married, she knew there was no better spot than Disneyland to host her bachelorette party. Since they all lived nearby, it was an easy drive and her bestie was a Disney super fan, making it magical for her special celebration.
But since Laura was #single—she decided to use the opportunity to well, meet a prince. Literally. “We spent the day dressing up and wandering around, going to shows and trying all of the food. We had plans that night to go to a club nearby, so as we were heading out, my friend dared me to see if I could get a prince to go out with us. I took the challenge and asked out a very cute ‘Aladdin.’ He was nice, but quickly let me know he was married. Fail.”
“That time my wife and I got too drunk at Epcot.”
Aye, aye, aye—most of Disney is alcohol free. Except one big (super fun) exception: the Food & Wine Festival at Epcot. But take a word of caution from Ryan James and tread carefully. As he knows firsthand, too many sips—and you might have a hangover the next day.
“My wife and I decided to go to Epcot and finally tour around the Food & Wine Festival after years of talking about it. We were going to start our family soon and knew we wouldn’t go back just for adults for a while. We were enjoying ourselves so much that we lost count of the tasting we had and ended up having too many.
Fast forward to a few hours later and I’m carrying my wife out of the park. Let’s just say the next morning wasn’t pretty.”
“That time an engagement went south.”
While Sarah Burns didn’t experience this herself, she was a witness to the ultimate embarrassing—and sad!—situation while on a Disney Cruise Ship. After dinner, everyone’s attention turned to a table where a man was down on one knee, asking his date to marry him.
Everyone prepared for a grand applause, but instead, the lady ran out, holding back tears. Come to find out, she didn’t want to say ‘yes’—and then was stuck on the ship for two more days at sea. Talk about awkward!
