CDC Quietly Removes 14-Day Quarantine Guidelines for Travelers
When the COVID-19 pandemic began earlier this year, the CDC recommended that anyone traveling out of the country or even out of state to quarantine for 14 days upon return home. However, the CDC just quietly removed that recommendation from their guidelines.
While the CDC has removed the 14-day quarantine guideline from their recommendations, they are still encouraging anyone traveling to follow all local guidelines. Many states have a mandatory 14-day quarantine when returning from another state. Previously, Florida was requiring any visitors coming from the Tri-State area to quarantine for 14-days upon their arrival to the state but that restriction has since been lifted.
With the 14-day quarantine recommendation removed from their official guidelines, the CDC reminds us that you still can be infectious up until 14 days of returning home. They now recommend that anyone who travels “regardless of where you traveled or what you did during your trip,” continue to social distance, wearing a face covering, and enhanced had washing. One should always monitor for any COVID symptoms as well.
It’s also important to note that while someone may be infected with COVID, they may not show any symptoms. The CDC states, “You may have been exposed to COVID-19 on your travels. You may fee well and not have symptoms, but you can be contagious without symptoms and spread the virus to others. You and your travel companions (including children) pose a risk to your family, friends, and community for 14 days after you were exposed to the virus.”
Even though the CDC has removed the 14-day quarantine guideline, it’s still important to familiarize yourself with local governemnt travel restrictions regarding a mandatory quarantine along with restrictions of the destination(s) you are visiting – both domestically and internationally. Some locations may require a negative COVID test upon arrival among other guidelines.
