AMC Shifts Reopening Dates To August After Studios Delay Film Release Dates
Theaters across the country continue to have a tough time of it. COVID-19 cases continue to surge making reopening more difficult. Couple this with the fact that studios are delaying their major releases and the likelihood of cinemas being back to normal this Summer becomes more and more unlikely. This is in keeping with a post on DEADLINE today that revealed that AMC went public with plans this morning to reshift th opening dates of their multiplexes for some time in mid to late August.
As you know the cinema giant, which has been struggling amidst the COVID-19 shutdown has theaters at both Disney Springs at Walt Disney World and Downtown Disney at Disneyland Resort.
This announcement is hot on the heels of the news that Warner Brothers will be moving Christopher Nolan’s Tenet from an end of June release date to a mid-August release date. Many see Tenent as setting the pace for the film industry on when it is safe to resume theater screenings. Warner Brothers said that the Nolan thriller will likely go first overseas in such markets as Asia and certain European markets where COVID-19 has quelled, and be released stateside in those states where it’s safe to reopen movie theaters.
AMC did give a specific reason for pushing theater openings into August saying, “The new timing reflects currently expected release dates for much anticipated blockbusters like Warner Bros.’ Tenet and Disney’s Mulan as well as release dates for several other new movies coming to AMC’s big screens.” However, the company gave no specific opening date for the 450 US theaters that the company owns that have remain shuttered since this March. Yet, in what can be seen as a positive sign for the movie industry worldwide, AMC did reveal that one third of cinemas in Europe and the Middle Easter are already open and operating normally.
Disney has a film of its own slated to open this summer, the live-action version of Mulan. As of going to print, Disney is sticking firm to its August 21st release date. However, this is a story that we’ll be paying close attention to and we promise to let you know as soon as we’ve found out more!
When AMC does reopen, guests can expect new COVID-19 safety measures and protocols to be implemented. This will include the electrostatic cleaning of seats for which the company announced a partnership with Clorox. This is a story that we’ll continue to follow closely here at MickeyBlog so keep checking in with us for further news and updates.
