Holidays On Batuu? Celebrations At Galaxy’s Edge
I am piecing my way through Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: Traveler’s Guide to Batuu and am still in the beginning of my exploration.
But I was intrigued when I saw Bethany Guerrero’s piece on Screen Rant:
Star Wars Holiday Special Event Teased For Galaxy’s Edge Theme Park
Guerrero correctly pointed out that, “According to the book, Batuu hosts its own Harvest Festival. During this event, the Black Spire Outpost is adored in golden decorations, and Oga’s Cantina serves unique food and drink. In addition to Batuu’s Harvest Festival, the Black Spire Outpost also celebrates Life Day. Notably a Wookie holiday, Life Day was featured in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special. Life Day is a time for red decorations and Hoth chocolate, nodding to Christmas festivities.”
So, I skipped ahead to get more of a good look at what I might be understanding.
And, there it was (minus any mention of Hoth chocolate).
Mentioned in the book are:
- Black Spire Day – “…celebrated every May fourth. Commemorates the founding of the Outpost.”
- Batuuan Harvest Festival – “This autumnal event celebrates the bounty of the harvest season… The Outpost itself is decorated in golden-hued banners, streamers.”
- Life Day – “Festive decor can be seen throughout Batuu and at the close of Life Day everyone gathers around the black spire to sing songs and spread good cheer to one another.”
Now, having been to Galaxy’s Edge during the holidays last year, I don’t recall any extra decorations around Batuu.
And this year, May 4 was during Walt Disney World’s Pandemic lockdown.
New Normal in Galaxy’s Edge
So. Who knows what a “normal” year in Galaxy’s Edge looks like. But, it would make sense to this traveler to the “Outer Rim” that Black Spire Outpost would follow a similar tradition of upgrade and renewal to the rest of Walt Disney World.
And, as Guerrero added:
Since Disney World has canceled Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party – and it remains to be seen what will happen with Christmas festivities – Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge could host the Harvest Festival and Life Day celebrations to spread some holiday cheer. Despite Disney theme parks experiencing closures, big plans lay ahead to immerse visitors into more franchise experiences.
Punch it, Chewie. And pass the Hoth chocolate.
