Two Disney Springs Restaurants Will Be Laying Off 100+ Workers
Two restaurants at Disney World’s downtown shopping and dining district Disney Springs have plans to lay off dozens of workers and reduce hours for other employees as a result of the negative impact of the COVID-19 virus.
According to a recent piece in the Orlando Business Journal, Paddlefish and Terralina Crafted Italian both of which are owned by the Levy Restaurant group have upcoming job terminations and hour reductions estimated to impact over 270 employees.
A total of 143 jobs will be eliminated by August 1st according to the OBJ article. Paddlefish is cutting 87 jobs and Terralina Crafted Italian is cutting an additional 56 jobs. Levy Restaurants told the State of Florida that the termination of jobs would be permanent going on to say that those employees being let go have the option of applying for other jobs within the company when they open.
The company’s official statement reads:
Given the continued unforeseen business circumstances created by recent sport league announcements, that teams would not be returning to playing in front of fans for a number of months and/or government directives requiring longer-term cancellation of larger events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. additional notification of jobs loss was not practicable.”
Levy is one of the largest restaurant groups in the State of Florida and specializing in food and beverage management at entertainment and sports venues including the Amway Center where the Orlando Magic play.
These job terminations come just as Walt Disney World gets ready to reopen the theme parks on July 11th. Many other businesses are hanging on hoping that the reopening means a resurgence in customers.
This news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that Cirque du Soleil is filing for bankruptcy. The company was slated to open up its first Disney-inspired production “Drawn to Life” right before the COVID-19 closure. The future of the project remains uncertain.
