Hidden Gems To Be On The Lookout For On Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
What an exciting week this has been Disney friends with the opening of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Hollywood Studios! If you haven’t yet had a chance to check out the first ride-through attraction featuring Mickey Mouse than start making your travel plans now! In the meantime, we’re here to let you in on a few “Hidden Gems” you’ll want to be on the lookout for as you leave the real world behind and enter the world of a Mickey Mouse short!
Old Friends (An One Charming New Feathery One)
One of the things we love most about Runaway Railway is that Mickey and Minnie are joined on a madcap adventure featuring many of your favorite Disney friends including Pluto, Engineer Goofy, a dancing Daisy Duck, Donald Duck (who is as hot-headed as ever) and Jackhammer Pete. There is also a brand new friend you’ll want to be on the lookout for. Chuuby (pronounced “choo-bee”) is sure to fly its way straight into your heart. This new sidekick loves to sing and dance and has been created exclusively for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway!
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is intended to resemble the hand-drawn animation of Disney Television Animation’s Emmy®-winning Mickey Mouse shorts.
As you head out on Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway the view is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Disney Imagineers studied every Mickey Mouse cartoon short and consulted with Mickey Mouse executive producer Paul Rudish and Art Direct Joseph Holt to make sure the hand-drawn look of the ride was as authentic as possible. A great example to be on the lookout for is during the stampede scene. Notice how extra floating lines have been added around cactus to create the illusion that they’re standing alone in mid-air!
You’ll hear more than just a whistle on this railroad adventure
If there’s one bit of feedback that we’re consistently hearing about Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway its that the theme song for the attraction, “Nothing Can Stop Us Now” is mighty catchy. This song was written by Christopher Willis the award-winning composer of the Mickey Mouse shorts and his wife Elyse Willis. In addition, the attraction features sound effects created by Disney Legend Jimmy MacDonald dating all the way back to the 1930s and Imagineers even used MacDonald’s original equipment to capture the same sound for new effects used in the attraction. Also, if Goofy’s train whistle sounds familiar it’s because it’s the same as the tri-tone whistle was used when Mickey made his big-screen debut in Steamboat Willie.
Classic Hollywood touches illuminate the brand-new attraction.
The first thing you’ll notice about Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is the spectacular marquee at the Chinese Theater. The signage features blinking bulb and hand-crafted animated neon depictions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse! The marquee was designed to pay homage to the displays custom-made for premieres in the mid 20th century
Pay attention to the details on the ride vehicles
Before you climb aboard the Runaway Railway check out the ride vehicles. They appear to be drawn by hand as if they are part of the cartoon!
Easter eggs hidden in the attraction provide nods to Disney history.
There’s lots of fun hidden Easter eggs throughout the attraction. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is mentioned in a newspaper with the headline “Oswald Wins!” See if you can find the sign for Iwerks and Uwerks Waterworks. The name of this water treatment plant pays tribute to Disney Legend UB Iwerks who sketched Mickey Mouse for the very first time! There’s also the 1401 Flower Shop which takes its address from Walt Disney Imagineering. Two other number 1901 and 1928 also appear which references the birth years of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse!
