Kevin Feige Discusses the MCU Jokes in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
WARNING: This article contains light Deadpool & Wolverine spoilers. If you want to avoid them, turn back now.
The most surprising part of Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine was not the litany of cameos, the pop culture references, or even the fact that Hugh Jackman finally put on Wolverine’s iconic yellow suit. It was the jokes that Deadpool made about Marvel’s recent struggles.
It is no secret that Marvel has scrambled to find its footing in a post-Endgame world. After a particularly difficult 2023, however, the studio seemed at a crossroads.

With Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania failing to live up to expectations and The Marvels having a disastrous run at the box office, Marvel found itself in uncharted territory.
Deadpool Lampoons Marvel’s Recent Output
In the third Deadpool installment, the Merc with the Mouth frequently made jokes at the expense of Marvel’s recent struggles.

Early in the film, Deadpool welcomes Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to the MCU, noting that he is joining at a “low point.”
Later, as Deadpool and Wolverine prepare to face off against Deadpool Corps, which is comprised of Deadpool variants, Reynolds’ character lambasts the Marvel Multiverse Saga, calling out the studio for “miss after miss.”

The always optimistic Nicepool quickly looks at the camera to state that he has loved everything since Endgame.
All Part of the Deadpool Experience
While hearing a Marvel character publicly ridicule the studio for its recent output was surprising, according to Marvel president Kevin Feige, it was all part of the Deadpool experience.
“The great thing about Deadpool is he’ll just directly talk about all of it. And if you ever find yourself saying, ‘It’s okay if Deadpool makes fun of a lot of things, but don’t make fun of me,’ you’re not a cool guy. You’re not a fun person.” Feige told IGN.

“I’ve always said, ‘Who does Deadpool make fun of the most? Ryan Reynolds.’ Deadpool makes fun of Ryan Reynolds all the time. So I think it is an honor that he now gets to poke fun at us and at Marvel.”
Feige’s Thoughts on Marvel’s Struggles
As Feige and his team move the MCU into a new era, the Marvel head is aware that there have been growing pains. Part of the problem for Marvel, however, is that they have simply set the bar so high.

“I think when the expectations are ‘biggest movie of all time,’ those are pretty lofty expectations. At least we were the biggest movie, briefly, before ‘Avatar [The Way of Water]’ was released,” Feige says.

Marvel: Avengers: Endgame
“But they’re high bars and there’s a dichotomy at Marvel Studios where we like being the underdog and we like exceeding expectations. But we also like setting the bar higher than the bar’s ever been set before. Those are two things that are hard to keep navigating over the years.”
Marvel’s Future Looks Bright
With Deadpool & Wolverine dominating the box office and Robert Downey Jr. set to return to the MCU, Marvel’s future looks much brighter than it did just months ago.

Sitting from his throne atop the Marvel kingdom, Kevin Feige can afford to laugh along with Deadpool, at least for now.
