Robert Downey Jr. Is Officially Coming BACK to the MCU
After months of speculation, Robert Downey Jr. is officially returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This time around, however, he won’t be playing Iron Man.
At the Marvel Studios Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con tonight, the Russo brothers (who will direct the film) revealed that the fifth Avengers movie will officially be titled Avengers: Doomsday and will feature the long-awaited entry of Victor Von Doom into the MCU.
As the Russo brothers revealed the official title of Avengers 5, a group dressed as Doctor Doom appeared on stage alongside them.
“If we’re going to do this, if we are going to bring him to movie theaters worldwide, then I think we are going to need the greatest actor in the world to play that character,” Joe Russo teased.
“Ladies and gentlemen, as proof of the unimaginable possibilities in the Marvel multi-universe, we give you the one person who can play Victor Von Doom.”
Downey Jr.’s Grand Reveal
At that moment, one Doom stepped forward and took off his mask. It was Robert Downey Jr.
“New mask, same task,” Downey Jr said. “I like playing complicated characters.”
Here is a video of the full reveal.

Marvel’s Biggest Star Returns
Downey Jr., of course, portrayed Tony Stark/Iron Man in 11 MCU films. Following his character’s death in Avengers: Endgame, it appeared that his time in the franchise had come to an end.
In recent months, however, the actor had sounded more open to returning.
“Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA,” Downey told Esquire magazine when asked if he would be open to returning to the MCU. “That role chose me. And look, I always say, ‘Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige.’ It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”
With Marvel needing a new “big bad” for Avengers 5, as it pivots away from Kang the Conqueror, Kevin Feige and his team are turning to the Russo Brothers and Robert Downey Jr.
Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
