Deadpool & Wolverine Delivers a $200 Million Opening Weekend, Best Ever For an R-Rated Film
Deadpool may just be the savior that Marvel Studios was looking for, after all.
After a difficult 2023, Kevin Feige and his team decided to slow things down this year and only release one film to theaters- Deadpool & Wolverine.
The third installment in the Deadpool franchise not only saw Ryam Reynold’s Merc with the Mouth finally enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but it also featured the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
As the only film released by Marvel this year, Deadpool & Wolverine needed to be a hit.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Delivers
Just days after the latest Deadpool film hit theaters, it is clear that Marvel had nothing to worry about.
Deadpool & Wolverine delivered a $205 million opening weekend, shattering the record for the highest R-rated movie debut of all time. The first Deadpool film set the previous high-water mark at $125 million.
With its record-breaking opening, Deadpool & Wolverine will rank as the eighth highest-grossing domestic opening of all time, behind Avengers: Endgame ($357.1 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($257.6 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.9 million), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220 million), Jurassic World ($208.8 million), and The Avengers ($207.4 million).
It is also the biggest debut since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The Biggest Movie of the Year
Additionally, the latest Marvel film now holds the distinction of having the best opening of 2024, a distinction previously held by Pixar’s Inside Out 2 ($155 million). To celebrate, Hugh Jackman recreated the iconic Wolverine meme.

Internationally, Deadpool & Wolverine brought back another $233.3 million, for a global total of $438 million.
With strong audience reviews and a record-breaking debut, how high Deadpool & Wolverine can climb remains to be seen. Still, one thing is clear- Marvel Studios is back.
