Marvel Reveals First ‘Fantastic 4: First Steps’ Footage at Comic-Con
While the revelation that Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Victor Von Doom for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars grabbed all the headlines, Marvel also gave audiences their first look at the Fantastic Four.
During last night’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel’s First Family officially assembled in Hall H to give fans a preview of what’s to come.
During the presentation, director Matt Shakman confirmed that the upcoming MCU film will indeed be set in the 1960s and revealed the official title: The Fantastic 4: First Steps.
“We’re doing a retro-future ’60s. Syd Mead was an inspiration. The ’60s, to me, is all about optimism,” Shakman told the audience. “I love the Fantastic Four. I love their power set. We want to be true to the comics but we want to be true to life.”
The 1960’s Will Influence the Film
According to the director, the comic’s debut in the early 1960s will influence the upcoming Fantastic Four film.
“The comic was created in the early ’60s, really at the same time that the space race was starting, so it is infused with that idea of looking to the stars and dreaming of a future where we would be space travelers,” he said. “And so I really wanted to take all of that great stuff from Apollo 11 and just imagine that instead of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, it was the Storms and Ben Grimm and Reed Richards heading off into space.”
Attendees Got a First Look at Fantastic Four: First Steps
Fans in attendance then got to see a preview of the upcoming film in the form of a faux newsreel. Scenes included Reed Richards teaching a class, the Fantasticar, the team launching off into space, and the Thing on a dating show. The clip ended with a preview of Galactus.
In the MCU, the Fantastic Four will consist of Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Strom/the Invisible Girl), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/the Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrac (Ben Grimm/the Thing). Julia Garner, Ralph Ineson, Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne will join them in the film.
The Fantastic 4: First Steps will hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
