Saharan Dust Temporarily Halts Tropical Activity for Disney Area and Central Florida
Daily rain, tropical storms, and hurricanes—Central Florida has its share of challenging weather in the summer.
However, just today, the local weather FOX 35 Storm Team reported that no tropical activity is expected for Orlando and Walt Disney World for the next week.

Why the change, especially this time of year? Saharan Dust is capping the atmosphere and preventing organized thunderstorm development over the waters.
Saharan Dust
Saharan Dust outbreaks occur every summer to varying degrees. The trade winds kick up the dust and carry it west off the coast of Africa, with tropical waves aiding in lofting immense dust into the air.

This layer of dust, known as the Saharan Air Layer (SAL), is between 5,000- 15,000 feet in the sky and typically occurs from mid-June to the end of September.
The dust typically peaks in July and August, but the current wave is one of the largest ever recorded in July, and some dust will reach Florida this weekend.

The dust arrives late on Saturday afternoon in Central Florida and peaks on Sunday and Monday. Visiting the theme parks? Guests can expect the sky to appear gray, murky, and hazy, but it will help lower the afternoon high temperatures.
Typical Pattern
This pattern is actually typical for this time of year and hurricane season. However, the Atlantic waters are warmer than usual, which could lead to more and stronger systems.
The weather lull is temporary, and meteorologists say to prepare for potential back-to-back tropical systems from mid-August through early October.
