‘Inside Out 2’ Screenwriter Discusses Scrapped Emotions
With Inside Out 2 currently in the midst of a historic box office run, Pixar clearly has a hit on its hands.
The highly anticipated sequel to 2015’s Inside Out returns audiences to Headquarters, where Joy, Sadness, and the rest of Riley’s emotions are still at the controls.
As a now-teenage Riley’s mind becomes increasingly complicated, however, the original Emotions are soon joined by new characters including Anxiety, Ennui, and Embarrassment.
Ideas That Did Not Make the Final Cut
While the new Emotions have been well-received by fans, it turns out that once upon a time, Guilt and Shame were also supposed to appear in the film.
During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Inside Out 2 writer Meg LeFauve discussed characters and ideas that were cut from the final film.
“We had a fisherman for ideas named Gail, and we went to the Facts and Opinions factory and saw how those were made. And that was super fun” LeFauve teased.
Guilt and Shame?
There were also going to be different emotions.
“I think in terms of emotionally, we really tried for quite a while to have Shame in the movie, and Guilt. Shame being more self-loathing, that thing that attacks you. And we talked to a lot of experts about it. The difference with shame is really not a great thing for you because it is just about attacking you. Whereas guilt is about taking responsibility and it’s a behavior, not who you are,” the writer shared.
While Guilt and Shame made it fairly far in the film’s development, eventually, the team decided that it needed to focus on Anxiety.
“But it really just never quite clicked. And for this version, because we really needed to center on Anxiety, it started to bifurcate too much of the storyline. But I do think we all have that self-loathing critic in our head. And we got to go there a little bit with the projections and how Anxiety can start to do that to you. So I think it’s in the movie. But that was one thing we explored that we didn’t ultimately feel was fruitful for this version.”
Procrastination Land
Previously, Pixar CCO Pete Docter revealed that at one time, Inside Out 2 would have introduced the audience to Procrastination Land, a place that always seemed to be under construction but never finished.
LeFauve gave further insight into the scrapped land.
“I love Procrastination Land. I was sad it didn’t make the cut, but I understood why,” LeFauve said. ” And I loved watching them run through a basically empty lot and then, all of a sudden, ‘Where’s Anger?!’ And he’s sitting watching television, and it was really, really funny. And Fear got a moment to inspire them all to go forward. But I understood why it didn’t make it.”
Will We Get More ‘Inside Out’ Films??
With Inside Out 2 turning into one of Pixar’s biggest films ever, the studio would naturally want to keep the franchise going.
Perhaps, then, we may still see Guilt, Shame, or even Procrastination Land show up in a possible Inside Out 3!
