‘X-Men ’97’ Will Not Connect to the Broader Marvel Cinematic Universe
While the X-Men are certainly being set up by Marvel Studios to play a large part in the future of the MCU, the first X-Men project released by the studio will be kept separate from the “sacred timeline.”
With X-Men ’97 scheduled to be released on March 20, 2024, fans have wondered if the X-Men the Animated Series reboot will have any impact on the MCU. With Deadpool & Wolverine arriving hot on the series’ tail and the multiverse ever-expanding, it seemed possible that there could be some tie-in.
Thankfully, according to showrunner Beau DeMayo, that will not be the case.
“We are our own thing,” he says.
A Continuation of the Iconic Series
For those who are unfamiliar with the original X-Men the Animated Series, the iconic show ended with the X-Men saying goodbye to a dying Charles Xavier.
In order to save Professor X’s life, Lilandra of the Shi’ar Empire whisked the X-Men’s leader to space in the hope that the alien science could save him.
X-Men ’97 is being set up as a direct continuation of the original series. In the first trailer released for the upcoming show, it appears as if Professor Xavier has passed away. Cyclops and Storm, then, must lead the X-Men in his place as the team tries to pick up the pieces.
The other big revelation in the X-Men ’97 trailer (aside from the ridiculous way Morph has been redesigned) was that Charles Xavier appointed Magneto his successor in his final will.
A Good Decision by Marvel
Hearing that X-Men ’97 will live in its own separate world should be good news for fans of the original series. Now, the new series can lean into its source material without worrying about the ramifications on the larger MCU. The decision also sets the precedent that Marvel Studios can create non-MCU content. That sounds like a win-win to me.

X-Men ’97 will land on Disney+ on March 20, 2024.
