Billy Dee Williams Chimes in on ‘The Rise of Skywalker’s Lingering Lando Question
In many ways, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was a film that left viewers with more questions than answers.
While the threat of the First Order ended once and for all, and Emporer Palpatine was seemingly finally vanquished, the film failed to tie up some of the narratives it had set up.
When we left the Star Wars universe at the end of the film, it is unclear if Rey would be able to rebuild the Jedi Order, whether or not Finn was force-sensitive, and how exactly Han Solo talked to Kylo Ren?
What About Lando’s Daughter?
On a more micro-level, the film also failed to continue the story of Rose in any meaningful way, and what about Lando Calrissian’s daughter?
For those who don’t remember, in The Rise of Skywalker, Lando reveals that the First Order took his daughter and indoctrinated her into becoming a stormtrooper.
At the same time, audiences were introduced to former stormtrooper Jannah. The young woman defected from the First Order and would later prove herself a hero. The implication seemed to be that Jannah was, in fact, Lando’s long-lost daughter.
Still, audiences never got their answer when the duo finally came face to face after the Battle of Exegol.
Billy Dee Williams Weighs In
In a recent interview on the Dagobah Dispatch, Billy Dee Williams revealed that Lucasfilm was toying with the idea of giving Lando a daughter, but the idea was never fully developed.
“They were trying to decide whether I should have a daughter. I don’t know if they decided to follow up on that idea. I haven’t heard any feedback or anything on where — or what direction they want to take with that.”
So there you have it. Even Lando himself does not know whether or not Jannah is his daughter. While the story’s framework is in place, we may never have an answer.
Will Lando’s Story Continue?
Although a Lando movie is set to be produced, the film will star Donald Glover as a younger version of the character. It seems unlikely that we will get an answer to Jannah’s parentage there.
Still, with Daisy Ridley set to continue the Skywalker story in an upcoming film and the post-Imperial era constantly being explored on Disney+, perhaps Lucasfilm will double back and tie up some of The Rise of Skywalker’s loose ends.
