Pixar Reached Out to Tim Allen and Tom Hanks About Reprising Their ‘Toy Story’ Roles
Many longtime Pixar fans were surprised in February to hear that Disney planned on creating a 5th installment in the Toy Story franchise.
At face value, the decision makes a lot of sense. Pixar was coming off the disaster that was Lightyear and the Toy Story franchise continues to be one of the studio’s most valuable assets.
The controversy surrounding Toy Story 5, however, is more nuanced.
‘Toy Story 4’ Seemingly Ended Woody’s Story
Toy Story 4 seemingly ended the story of Buzz Lightyear and Woody’s friendship, with the cowboy deciding to stay behind with Bo Peeop and the other “Lost Toys.” Buzz and the rest of the gang meanwhile, head back home with Bonnie.
With Woody passing his badge on to Jessie and sharing an emotional farewell with Buzz, it seemed as if Woody’s story was over.
Well, apparently some kind of reunion is on the horizon.
Pixar Has Reached Out To Hanks and Allen
In an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Tim Allen, who has voiced Buzz Lightyear since the original Toy Story (although he was replaced by Chris Evans for Lightyear), revealed that Pixar has reached out to both him and Tom Hanks (who voices Woody) about reprising their roles.
“Bob Iger, head of Disney, said it was on and actually said it was going to happen,” Allen said. “They have reached out to Tom and I to reprise the roles. They’re not saying anything about it…You wonder if four was too many. Is five going to be too much?”
A Returning Writer?
While the details of Toy Story 5 remain under wraps, Allen teased that a former Toy Story writer has returned to write the latest installment in the franchise.
“According to the scuttlebutt, the writer that’s doing it wrote one of the better ones and said, ‘If I didn’t get this write, I wouldn’t do it.’ It could be a very, very interesting way to reunite it.”
While fans can debate whether or not another Toy Story film would ruin Toy Story 4’s satisfying send-off, it is hard to see Pixar turning down a $1 billion film because of story concerns.
At this time there is no release date for Toy Story 5, but by the sound of things, the wheels are in motion.
