Disney+ Password Sharing Crackdown Begins
The Disney+ password-sharing crackdown is coming. Beginning November 1, users will be unable to share their account outside of their households, with the new rules kicking off in Canada.
Disney’s flagship streaming service sent email notices to Canadian subscribers on Wednesday, detailing the new password-sharing policy.
“Unless otherwise permitted by your service tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household,” the notice said. “If we determine that you have violated this agreement, we may limit or terminate access to the service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this agreement.”
Disney’s Password-Sharing Strategy
While the exact strategy that Disney will take to crack down on password sharing remains unclear, CEO Bob Iger indicated that the company could charge subscribers an extra fee to unlock more users.
Netflix, for example, recently started charging $8 extra for additional users. By choosing this strategy, Disney could bolster the revenue that the streamer brings in.
Additionally, Disney may be hoping to drive new subscribers altogether by implementing the password-sharing ban.
During the company’s Q3 earnings call, Iger revealed that Disney was “actively exploring” ways to curb password-sharing. Additionally, the Disney CEO asserted that the company has the technological capabilities to monitor where sign-ins are coming from.
While the password-sharing crackdown will begin in Canada, it is only a matter of time before US customers are affected.
Until then, all eyes will be on our northern neighbor, as Disney begins to roll out its password-sharing crackdown strategy.
